Abstract
By 2050 the world will need to produce around twice as much food as it does now, from less water, less land and increasingly degraded soil. The dwindling opportunities offered by changing global circumstances will only be captured if agriculture can meet the production, environmental and institutional challenges that are on the horizon. If agriculture in the Top End is to develop, prosper and contribute to the world's increasing food needs, exceptionally good soil management is required to increase water and nutrient storage, improve efficiency and protect natural resources.
